Guyanese should ensure they are registered to vote

Dear Editor,

It was heartening to see the youth of the PNCR finally involved in a very vibrant rally last weekend as the party continues on the hot campaign trail for elections 2011. The Guyana Youth and Student Movement’s (GYSM) recent National Youth Convention was well supported and engaged those present in thought-provoking presentations and discussions on the role they can and must play in election 2011.

The PNCR’s presidential candidate Mr David Granger made a stern call for the ‘Get 10 Movement.’ This I believe is an excellent appeal that all persons, not only the youth, must heed seriously.

Voting is a right that must be exercised by all persons of voting age. Failure to exercise the franchise is a failure by oneself to shape the future of the political economy of the country.

Gecom has opened its claims and objections period, and all Guyanese must make every effort to ensure they are all registered and eligible to vote.

Here is where the call by Mr Granger is most important.

Guyanese must ensure that they meet and encourage friends, family, and even the acquaintances they make, to find the time to head to a Gecom office in their area and complete the registration process.

More of these calls for Guyanese to ensure that they take the time to get registered and vote, must come from political leaders, especially those in the opposition. Change must come to Guyana; it is long overdue. Voter education is a prime responsibility of political parties.

The interest and determination with which persons are willing to line up for the next big concert ticket and the patience with which they line up to get into the stadium or the venue for the next big show, must be the way they treat their registration process and queuing (if necessary) on election day.

Get registered and vote on election day. Spread the word!

Yours faithfully,
Richard Francois
