Accountant struck down near seawalls dies

The accountant who was admitted to hospital in a critical condition after being struck down by two motorcycles on October 25, died late Wednesday night.

Wayne Maison told Stabroek News that his brother Franz Welch died around 11 pm in the Intensive Care Unit of the Georgetown Public Hospital where he had been transferred last Thursday. He was previously a patient of the High Dependency Unit.

A grief-stricken Maison said that the death has really shocked him especially since his brother opened his eyes last Thursday and appeared to be improving. He said that when he left, he had the confidence that his brother was going to make a full recovery. He noted too that a minor surgery was scheduled for yesterday morning.

He said that about an hour after the death two traffic policemen turned up at the hospital and that infuriated him. He explained that since the accident the police had paid very little interest in the case and he saw it as a slap in the face that they would turn up only after Welch had died.

Maison said too that what got him even angrier was that the police are doing nothing to catch the motorcyclists, even though they are in possession of the motorcycles at the Kitty Police Station. The police are also in possession of the names and addresses for the owners. “I had to ask them how they found the time to come and so soon after he had died,” he recalled.

“I find this case very strange,” he stressed.
He is confident though that despite the sloth of the police, the two men will be caught and brought to justice.

He said that he and his relatives along with a lawyer attempted to make contact with the Traffic Chief but were told on each occasion that he was out of office. Stabroek News also made efforts to speak with the Traffic Chief but was also told that he was unavailable.

Maison called on the Commissioner of Police as well as the Ministry of Home Affairs to ensure that the police do their job and begged that his brother’s death not “become another hit and run”.

Based on reports, Welch was heading to his car which was parked near the seawalls between Sheriff Street and Conversation Tree when he was hit.

He leaves to mourn, his wife, a three-year-old daughter and other relatives.
