Mayers in pole position for today’s Caribbean Race of Champions

Barbadian Roger Mayers heads into today’s final leg of the Seaboard Marine Caribbean Race of Champions in the pole position, after powering 33.60s in his Ford Focus at the time trials at South Dakota yesterday afternoon.

That time placed Guyana’s Mark Vieira, driving his Mazda RX 8, into second position, after he produced a quick 33.70s to set up an interesting showdown today. Mayers, who had stated that he was here to smash the existing lap record, sent a stern message to current race leader David Summerbell who clocked 33.78s.

In the Superbike category, Canada’s Kevin Graham, who missed the Barbados and Jamaica legs, was also in devastating form, recording a blistering 35.044s to take pole position over Carlos Rodrigues, who returned a time of 35.01s; Gregory Lopes was third with an impressive 35.930s.

Current Superbike leader Stephen Vieira finished off the pace with 36.127s. Stabroek Sport learnt that he experienced mechanical problems, something he had revealed to this publication in an earlier edition. No other results were available up to press time. Meanwhile, Canada’s Craig Atkinson said he is hoping for a top three performance, despite experiencing some electrical problems; his team is working overtime to have them rectified. He revealed that the machine is handling well, but is not generating the speed to challenge Graham and Rodrigues.

Rodrigues, on the other hand, said he was pleased with his time and is looking forward to going one step better today.
