Couple remanded on possession charge

Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry remanded a couple on a charge of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking after they pleaded not guilty when they yesterday appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

It is alleged that on November 9, at their home located at Lot 100 Middle Road La Penitence, Roy Sandiford and Onika Pompey had 256 grammes of cannabis in their possession for the purpose of trafficking.

The prosecution told the court that on the said day the couple had a heated argument and Sandiford allegedly assaulted the woman who reported the matter to the police. She also allegedly told the officers that Sandiford had narcotics at his home. Some time later, the woman summoned a police patrol that was in the area, a search was conducted, the narcotics found and both parties were taken to the Ruimveldt Police Station where the suspected cannabis was weighed in their presence. It amounted to 256 grammes; subsequently the duo was charged.

The prosecution objected to bail for the couple on the grounds that no special circumstances were presented to the court. The duo was then ordered to appear in court on December 15.
