Cheddi Jagan Memorial Football Tournament …NA United and Rosignol United in nil-all draw

Berbice Football Association (BFA) officially launched the fourth annual Cheddi Jagan Memorial Football Tournament on Sunday at the Blairmont Estate Community Centre with a match between defending champions New Amsterdam United and Rosignol United.

Despite a boisterous crowd, which rooted for Rosignol United, the match ended in a nil-all draw. Prior to that match Hopetown Football Club, which played unbeaten in the Inter-Block tournament that was sponsored by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, emerged winner of the Berbice zone of the tournament with wins over Ithaca and Calcutta.

Hopetown defeated Ithaca 1-0 with a Teron McDonald second-half goal while Calcutta inflicted a 6-2 drubbing over Belladrum/Airy Hall Mix. Former national under-16 striker Sherwin Lewis netted a hat-trick while Theon Sharpe and Orin Fontanelle supported with a goal apiece.

A second half goal by Clifford Garraway for Hopetown sunk Calcutta. However, the defence of Norde McDonald helped in keeping the score line at 1-0. Hopetown will now travel to the City to match skills with the other area winners on November 26.
