Religious groups urge peace ahead of polls

With elections just two days away, the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Brickdam held an all night vigil for the preservation of peace and justice for the nation.

The night of prayer was organized by the Georgetown Pastoral Area and in the first hour the church was filled with parishioners.

The purpose of the praying meeting was for all Guyanese to recognize the profound, lasting implications of the major elections. Prayers and supplications were offered up for the leaders so that God will enable them to be individuals and ambassadors of the nation, who will govern with integrity, righteousness and wisdom.

Earlier on Friday, the community was involved in a day of Fasting and Prayer. Present for the vigil were Administrator of the Cathedral Rev Father John Persaud, Jesuit Father Edwin Thadhue; Priest Alex Perez from Nicaragua and other attendees.
The catholic community is urging all faith communities to fill the remaining days leading up to election and beyond with prayer, intersession and vigil where “we can strengthen and hone the love and desire for God’s Kingdom and resolve to “feed” and give life to the Guyana we cherish.”

Meanwhile, the Central Islamic Organisation of Guyana (CIOG) President Fazeel Ferouz, in a statement, appealed to all Guyanese to exercise their franchise in peace and harmony.

“We appeal to all Guyanese that we should strive to enjoy a peaceful election day, and irrespective if the result is not in conformity with our choice, we should have as paramount our country’s future at heart,” he said. “Let us all remember, at the day’s end, we are all brothers and sisters that share the same values for our family’s future, and that we are Guyanese that must together build a peaceful Guyana for the benefits of all.”
