Two injured in accident with cow on West Coast

Shavanie Willis, an Environmental Health Science student from the Ministry of Education, and Durvin Chase of Lot 41 Sarah Lodge West Coast Demerara, suffered lacerations and wounds about their bodies.

Reports are the duo was returning home after a visit from Georgetown and were travelling in a western direction along the Hague Public road, when the motorbike they were riding collided with a cow that was lying on the road. This caused Chase, who was the rider, to lose control of the bike, which plummeted into a load of sand that was nearby.

This newspaper understands that the two were left unattended for over fifteen minutes, after which they were taken to the Leonora Cottage hospital to undergo medical treatment. Willis who was in terrible pain related that “I don’t know what happen after I fell off the bike but when I wake up I was at the hospital and in a lot of pain.” A family member said that the two were minutes away from their destination when the mishap occurred.

Emenita Colinet, mother of the student expressed her frustration and noted that the owner of the animals should be arrested, so as to send a strong message to potential law breakers. “If you are travelling late hours on the West Coast there are always a lot of animals in the middle of the roadway… this can really cause terrible accident,” she stated.

The distraught woman also noted that her daughter lost a lot of blood following the accident and is suffering from severe pains; “she suffered injuries to she eyes and complaining for really bad pain… she can’t even walk”.

When Stabroek News visited the family at the hospital they were awaiting medical attention and awaiting the results of an x-ray examination. It was later related that Chase was transferred to the St Joseph Mercy Hospital, where he is currently a patient.
