Cops still probing Lumumba case – Persaud

The case involving Presidential Advisor Odinga Lumumba and a polling day presiding officer is still being investigated by the police.

According to Crime Chief Seelall Persaud, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has advised an ongoing investigation into the incident that took place on elections day.

Earlier last week, Stabroek News was told that the DPP’s Chambers had advised that the presidential advisor be charged with assault and for provoking a breach of the peace.

On elections day, while at a polling station at Lot 455 Aubrey Barker Street, South Ruimveldt, Presiding Officer Onika Beckles reportedly refused entry to a PPP/C observer, who had no identification, and moments later Lumumba turned up with three other men. After a confrontation with a policewoman at the gate, during which Beckles intervened, Lumumba allegedly shoved the presiding officer and in the process destroyed a cellular phone that was being used by an elections observer.
