Man admits using money instead of buying scrap metal

A man who pleaded guilty to converting $100,000 given to him to purchase scrap metal for his business associate was yesterday admitted to bail in the sum of $50,000 when he appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.

On November 15, 2010, being solely entrusted with $100,000 by Nazim Pasha to purchase scrap metal and return same to the said Pasha, Michael Williams fraudulently converted it to his own use.

When given a chance to respond, Williams, 47, said the virtual complainant (VC) is a scrap metal dealer like him and after receiving the money given to him to purchase the metal, he decided to use $80,000 to offset a number of medical expenses he had.

The defendant who resides at Cooper Street, Albouystown, begged for leniency and asked the magistrate for a chance to repay the man the money he used stating that he has already given back $20,000.

In pleading for bail, Williams said he is the sole breadwinner of his household and both his mother and wife are sick. An apologetic Williams then promised the court that he would not be involved in such an act again.

After listening to the case, the magistrate granted the father of three $50,000 bail. The case was adjourned to February 18 for a probation report before sentencing.
