Teens charged over theft of PNCR boat, engine

Two teenagers accused of stealing a boat and engine belonging to the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) were yesterday admitted to bail in the sum of $75,000 each after appearing before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.

The allegation against Leon Gobin, 17, a logging supervisor of Kwakwani Park  and 19-year-old Venzil Hackett, a labourer of Half Mile Wismar, Linden is that between February 25 and 26 at Kwakwani Water Front, they stole one fibreglass boat and engine valued $1.5M, property of the PNCR. The jointly charged duo was not required to plead to the larceny charge on which they were arraigned at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.   Prosecutor Stephen Telford told the court that the facts were as charged after which no further details were given as to what transpired on the day in question.

The prosecution had no objection to the teens being placed on bail but requested that it be in a substantial sum.

Meanwhile, attorney Gregory Gaskin who represented the teens told the court that his clients have an iron-clad alibi for the day of the incident. According to Gaskin at the time of the alleged incident, his clients were at Linden.

He did not provide further details, saying that he prefers to wait for the trial.

The lawyer then made a successful application for reasonable bail on the grounds that the defendants have no antecedents, pose no risk of flight, have fixed addresses and have been assisting with police investigations.  The case was transferred to the Kwakwani Magistrates’ Court for March 18.
