China has no concrete plans with Suriname yet on mega projects

(De Ware Tijd) PARAMARIBO – No concrete arrangements have been made between China and the Bouterse government yet regarding planned mega-projects, it appears from an exclusive interview DWT has had with Chinese Ambassador Yuan Nansheng. The only project confirmed so far consists of 5000 low-cost houses to be built by Dalian. Yet Nansheng says about the mega-projects, “Suriname has informed the Chinese Embassy of the projects for a road to Brazil, a dam in Nickerie and a deep-sea port, and hopes that China will be able to assist with the construction of the bridge across the Corantijn. But both governments have not discussed these plans exhaustively.” The Ambassador adds, “China would gladly do its best to support and help. But we cannot deny that the plans will run into difficulties due to the constraints of Suriname’s constitutional debt ceiling.”
