Man held for traffic offence found with ganja

A man, held by community police for riding in the wrong direction down a one-way street, was later found with marijuana in his possession, a court heard on Thursday.

Dexroy Brown, 19, was remanded to prison by Magistrate Sueanna Lovell after he pleaded not guilty to a charge of possession of narcotics at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

It is alleged that on November 25, Brown of North Road, Georgetown had two grams of cannabis in his possession.

Prosecutor Jairam Luckhai told the court that on the day in question, a community policing group was in the Ruimveldt area when they observed the accused riding in breach of a one-way road. The man was confronted and a search of his person was carried out and two grammes of cannabis were discovered in his pants pocket.

The prosecutor later objected to bail on the grounds that no special circumstance was presented to the court and asked that the man be remanded to prison. The magistrate ruled in favour of the application and the matter was adjourned until December 12.
