A Number 19 Village businessman was attacked and robbed by armed bandits on Saturday evening and is now nursing wounds to the head inflicted by a cutlass beating.

Arjune Mahadeo, 35, of 37 White Bridge Street, Number 19 Village, Corentyne was assaulted by four masked bandits who were armed with a gun and cutlasses. The men robbed Mahadeo’s restaurant and grocery business of his days earning along with $80,000 before making good their escape.

Dewan Ramdeo, 25, who is Mahadeo’s brother and who was also assaulted by the robbers said the incident occurred around 8.30 pm on Saturday.
Ramdeo said he was about to close up the shop when a customer went to purchase food.

As Mahadeo prepared the food, Ramdeo said, he was standing on the bridge outside the shop making a phone call.

“I see four individuals walking coming towards the shop but the street dark so me aint know if they coming to the shop or heading out to the public road so I aint pay them no mind,” Ramdeo recalled.

He said when he looked in the direction the four individuals once again he noticed that they were running towards him “and I see them with gun and cutlass and all ah dem had on mask.

“They tell me say this is a stick up don’t move. Then I say that I don’t live hey I just making a internet call. Them tek away the cordless phone and drop it in the drain beneath the bridge,” Ramdeo added.

Ramdeo said he was forced into the shop by one of the bandits who “kick me and the customer to the ground” while the other bandits gained entrance to the living quarters where Mahadeo, his mother and two children were and began to assault Mahadeo demanding money.

The bandits beat Mahadeo to the head with their cutlass Ramdeo said his brother later told him.

According to Ramdeo it was neighbours who raised an alarm and called the police who responded promptly but the men had already made good their escape. Ramdeo said his brother was taken to the hospital by neighbours where he received several stitches for his wounds.

Ramdeo said his brother is very traumatised by the incident and “he so bad he can’t walk. The doctor say nah leh he talk much,” Ramdeo added.
As for the children, Ramdeo said one of them was his daughter and she too was very traumatised by the incident.
