GHB plans to erect hockey court at stadium

The Guyana Hockey Board (GHB) is scheduled to hold its Annual General Meeting (AGM) on January 26 where plans for the present year are expected to be discussed; this is according to GHB Secretary Gregory Sills.

According to Sills while the body already has a number of plans identified for the year these are expected to be ratified at the meeting, after which the plans are expected to be carried out.

On the agenda for the meeting will also be the reports of the president and secretary along with the presentation of the body’s audited accounts for the year 2010.

However the body will not be holding elections for office bearers as that is now being done biannually as was unanimously agreed following elections last January where GHB President Philip Fernandes retained his presidency.
Expected to be discussed at the meeting will be the board’s plan to erect an outdoor hockey court at the Guyana National Stadium at Providence.

According the Sills, the board has already been allocated a piece of land by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport. However, he said a challenge has been encountered in that the land needs to be filled out more to meet required dimensions.

“The Ministry of Sport has identified a piece of land for us, however when we checked it, it doesn’t have the length or breadth to meet the international standards for the court. But they said that that is the only piece of land they have available,” Sills said.
“We will now to try to see how we can get it up to the neccessary size, filling it out with mud. That is one of the challenges that we will be looking at this year.”

Erecting such a facility, Sills said, will cost somewhere in the vicinity of US$150,000.
Another costly venture the board will be looking into is to participate at the Pan American Challenge tournament scheduled for Brazil in July.
Sills explained that they hoped  to have teams  play in the team event in order to qualify for participation in the Pan American Cup which will be held next year.

He said following the meeting the body will decide on the way forward for carrying out these and other objectives for the year.
