Santa in Silver Hill

Santa came early to Silver Hill on the Linden-Soesdyke Highway this year. On December 18, toys were distributed to the children of the community at a Christmas party organized by Wendy Grenada, with financial assistance from the Sisters on the Move of Brooklyn, New York, and the Guyana Christian Charities of Canada.

They were not the only ones to receive gifts; toys and clothing were given to 130 children in all, including some in Linden and in Georgetown. All ages were catered for up to 14 years. The day before the Silver Hill party, there had been another one for the children of Good Hope.

Silver Hill is a very small Amerindian community of perhaps 300 people, all of whom have moved there from various locations in the hinterland.

Among the photos below is one of Aloysius and Teresita Laud, who came originally from Aishalton in the South Rupununi, but who for the last six years have been living with their daughter Carmelita in Silver Hill.
