Cricketers request meeting with President Ramotar

The saga involving the replacement of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB)  by government with an Interim Management Committee (IMC) took a new twist yesterday with 14 members of the National Twenty20 side requesting a meeting with His Excellency, President Donald Ramotar.

According to a copy of a letter seen by Stabroek Sport,

Donald Ramotar

the players wrote President Ramotar requesting to meet with him or a person designated by him.

“We the selected players of the Guyana National Cricket team are respectfully requesting a meeting with your Excellency or any designate with regards to our continued participation in West Indies Cricket Board and International Cricket Council events,” the players wrote.

According to the letter from the players they are concerned whether they will be able to participate in the upcoming West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) regional Twenty20 tournament.

The WICB has issued a directive to the GCB requesting that it indicate if the GCB will be able to have a Guyana team participate in the upcoming competition.

The WICB has stated that they would only accept a team sent by the GCB  whom the WICB recognizes as the legal authority for cricket in Guyana.

“We the players earn our livelihood from playing cricket, WICB and International Cricket Council (ICC) events constitute the major part of our career earnings,” the players’ wrote.

“We are the proud representatives of a rich legacy of cricket, and many of us have already represented our country with honor, those of us who have yet to are yearning to.

“We respectfully ask in light of the above developments that the Government of Guyana remove all impediments including the padlocks on the GCB office doors, which hinder the Guyana Cricket Board from fully functioning so that we may be able to earn our livelihood.

“We ask that some measure of care be demonstrated for our welfare and that statements indicating the Government is prepared to accept a ban on participation from all cricket be rescinded as we are the one who would suffer under such an imposition,” the letter stated.
