Maid charged with stealing $1.5M diamond bracelet

Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry granted a 50-year-old maid $100,000 bail when she appeared in court charged with stealing her employer’s $1.5M diamond bracelet.

The Georgetown Magistrate’s Court heard that between November 3, 2010 and January 3, 2011, Chandroutie Muniram, a mother of two of Lot 13 Plantation Le Ressouvenir, allegedly stole the gold and diamond bracelet from Nandanie Sukwah of Sheriff Street, Georgetown. The woman pleaded not guilty to the charge of simple larceny when it was read to her.

Prosecutor Jairam Luckhai said on the day in question, the VC secured the item in her bedroom and left her home. At that time, Muniram was left in the house to carry out her normal chores including cleaning the VC’s bedroom. When Sukwah returned home she discovered the bracelet was missing. She promptly made checks but the item was not recovered. She then reported the matter to the police and the accused was arrested and charged.

Muniram was ordered to return to court on Monday.
