Army cadet officers demonstrate skills

The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) yesterday held its annual Cadet Day at Base Camp Stephenson, Timehri where fifteen Cadet Officers showed off the skills learned in the one-year training programme.

In the presence of their families, President Donald Ramotar, Prime Minister Samuel Hinds and other distinguished guests, the officers showed off their skills in navigating the obstacle course, surviving in the jungle, disassembling and reassembling their weapons while blindfolded and also demonstrated a house searching exercise.

asked whether they made a good choice to allow their sons to join the force and many responded positively as the cadets displayed their ability to survive almost any challenge that might come their way in the line of their duties. Confidence was expressed that the officers would grow and mature into leaders who will make their country and themselves proud and it was noted that the cadets have already completed the Standard Officers’ Course #44.

Lieutenant Simpson took the invitees through the programme as the officers displayed their confidence- carrying a 50-pound log in pairs as they gave the patrons a preview of the intense training they have to go through.

The army’s Chief of Staff Commodore Gary Best said that it was a pleasure for him to be there and thanked the organizers for putting the programme together which he said was well executed by the ensigns. He deemed joining the military as the greatest sacrifice that a young man can make, to put his life at risk to defend his country when necessary.

He added that the army had a very good year last year and stating that training is the hallmark of the military, said they train all year and hope to continue doing the same this year.

Best said that he encourages females to join the military but the decision is left to them. He pointed out that Guyana was the first country in the region that allowed females to join the military and emphasized that they do not train females to fight in combat but they are there in combat support.

The parents were all delighted to see their sons display the skills that the GDF had instilled in them to improve their leadership abilities and confidence level and at the same time grooming them to protect the nation. They extended their thanks to the organizers and Best for allowing them the privilege to see the ensigns perform and at the same time lauding them for the military skills and knowledge that they have inculcated in their children.
