Corriverton woman gets three years for ganja

At the Mibicuri Court on Wednesday an unemployed woman of Kingston Squatting Area, Corriverton was sentenced to three years imprisonment on a charge of possession of narcotics.

Debbie Davis, 47, pleaded guilty to having in her possession one gramme of cannabis sativa on January 16 when she appeared before Magistrate Krishndat Persaud. Apart from the three-year sentence Davis was fined $10,000. Police Prosecutor, Sergeant Michael Grant told the court that the police conducted a search on the defendant’s home and observed something in her hands.

They examined it and found a transparent plastic bag with leaves, seeds and stems and she was arrested and charged.

Reports are that she was previously convicted for a similar offence and had gotten off lightly by just paying a fine and doing community services. As such, Magistrate Persaud told her he could not use his discretion in this case.
