Why did UG Council terminate Kissoon’s contract?

Dear Editor,

The termination of Mr Freddie Kissoon’s contract at UG is regrettable. It is not clear why the UG Council has decided to terminate the contract. It is hoped it is not for political reasons.

No one should be penalized for political affiliation, political viewpoints or for criticizing the government or the opposition.  As much as Mr Kissoon is an irritant and rubs people the wrong way and his writings are often flawed, he should not be victimized for his views.

The PPP government must be applauded for allowing unfettered freedom of expression during its tenure in office. Mr Kissoon took advantage of this freedom to lambaste the PPP administration almost daily over the last 10 years and he was not victimized at UG.

Mr Kissoon met the mandatory retirement age last August and was given a one year contract to continue past his retirement age. The Council should inform the public why the contract was cancelled prematurely midway. It had earlier been reported that there were complaints about Mr Kissoon’s lack of publication and whether his contract was properly entered into.  If this and other reasons were tendered for removing the lecturer from his job the public should know.

Yours faithfully,
Vishnu Bisram
