North West woman jailed on wounding charges

Magistrate Hazel Octave-Hamilton sentenced a North West District woman to three years jail for felonious wounding and 18 months jail for unlawful wounding, when she appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

According to the facts of the case, on January 27, at water front, Port Kaituma, Levita Norton unlawfully and maliciously wounded Aliveira James with intent to maim, disfigure or cause her actual bodily harm. It is also alleged on the same day, Norton unlawfully and maliciously wounded Arlena Boyce. Norton pleaded guilty to both charges when they were read to her in court.

Prosecutor Denise Booker told that court that the trio are known to each other. On the day in question, the two virtual complainants were at the “Harris disco” located at Port Kaituma when Boyce asked the accused where she had purchased the pair of pants that she was wearing.

As a result, an argument ensued and Norton subsequently picked up a piece of broken glass and inflicted wounds upon Boyce. The prosecutor noted that the other VC intervened and she was also wounded.

A medical report was obtained, the matter was reported and the defendant was arrested. She admitted to the offence under caution, the prosecution concluded.

After listening to the facts, the Magistrate stressed to a downcast Norton the seriousness of the offences.

She then took into consideration both the mitigating and aggravating circumstances before handing down the sentences. The sentences will run concurrently.
