‘Customer’ robs vendor of gold chain

A single mother of five was yesterday robbed of a gold chain valued $120,000 by a man who posed as a customer at her snackette at Bush Lot, West Coast Berbice.

Kamla Swhenand, 38, who also sells fruits, was at the snackette with her nine-year-old daughter when a man rode up on a motorcycle, C 4752, and asked to purchase bananas.

She recalled that she was about to sell him when he walked around the other side and used both hands to grab the chain off her neck.

He then “pushed the chain in his pocket, jumped on his motorcycle and ride away,” she told Stabroek News. She said she and her daughter who started to scream were terrified and when this newspaper visited yesterday they were still in shock.

Swhenand told this newspaper too that shortly after committing the act the man passed the scene twice in a taxi which was driving slowly as he looked at what was taking place. By then many persons had gathered at the snackette after learning about the robbery.

She visited the Fort Wellington Police Station to make a report and a policeman visited later and took some information. He also told her to contact the station if the man returned.
