Are the authorities trying to trap drivers with the absence of visible signs?

I refer to a letter in your newspaper dated Wednesday, February 8, 2012 captioned ‘There should be upright signs indicating one-way streets.’ I totally agree with the writer and support the idea that the relevant authority should do the proper thing by erecting appropriate signs for the benefit of road users – signs that forewarn drivers and signs that are properly visible. What is the point of creating one-way streets and not giving adequate, proper and continuing notice. Is it to trap drivers?

It is an exercise in futility to say to the public that because the action has been gazetted and a notice placed in the daily newspapers that the buck stops there. No, the general public and drivers in particular, need and deserve better, and should settle for nothing less. For some reason or other we seem to have become brainwashed into thinking that we should accept anything that is thrown at us, only to find that the particular irritant becomes the norm. The old, tired and washed-out road signs are just other reminders.

Whilst we are on this subject, couldn’t something be done to give advance warning, say a corner or so, to alert drivers when a street or lane is closed for emergency purposes, including road repairs, etc, etc. This would certainly alleviate some of the resulting chaos.

Yours faithfully,
Joan Fields
