Workers protest over damaged equipment at Enmore sugar factory

Workers at the Enmore sugar packaging plant briefly protested last night after the bearings on the sifter that separates the sugar crystals broke–the fourth time this has happened.

“I don’t know if it is misaligned or what it is,” one worker told Stabroek News last night. He said that the bearings broke at about 8:55 pm and it is the second time for this week that it has happened. The bearings broke two times previously and the worker said that there are “a lot of problems” at the factory. He said that workers believe that these issues are being experienced due to the inferior equipment in the US$12.5 million plant.

The sifter where the problem occurred last night is one that separates the fine sugar crystals from the bigger ones that are packaged as Demerara Gold. The bearings also broke on Tuesday night. The workers are upset at these problems, the man said. He said as a result they have to store the sugar until the equipment is fixed. The workers ended their brief protest after they were assured that the broken bearings would be replaced.
