Two miners chopped after Tamakay dispute

Two miners were yesterday taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital after being chopped by a third man during a confrontation over money at Tamakay Backdam, Region Seven.

Mutena Hinds, 40, of 96 Friendship, East Coast Demerara, was up to press time in the theatre undergoing surgery while 37-year-old Royston Abrams, of Coldingen, ECD, was treated and sent away.

According to hospital sources, Hinds suffered chop wounds to his left hand while Abrams’ right wrist, chest and left arm were injured.

It was reported that Hinds and the alleged attacker were engaged in an argument sometime around 5 am over $500,000 which was said to have been owed to one of the men.

Hinds became alarmed at the enraged voices and went over to where the men were to enquire what the problem was.

At this point, the third man, who was said to have escaped unharmed, reached for a cutlass and fired chops wildly at the two.

According to reports, Hinds escaped before Abrams, whose wounds were said to be more severe. Though Hinds was required to undergo surgery, it was indicated that his condition is stable.
