Preparations on schedule for upcoming Inter-Guiana festival

The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports said preparations for the second Inter-Guiana Cultural Festival (IGCF), which runs from August 23 to August 26, 2012, are on schedule and publicity for the event will be increased after a theme and logo is approved at an upcoming meeting.

The ‘Festival of the Three Guianas,’ as the IGCF is also known, is an avenue for strengthening friendly relations amongst the people of Guyana, Suriname and Cayenne and would serve to promote the cooperative development of the countries’ relations in the arts and culture fields, a Culture Ministry press release said.

Inaugurated in Paramaribo, Suriname last year, the festival will feature a packed programme in six disciplines. According to the release, the programme will include exhibitions, performances, workshops, lecturers and master classes in the performing arts, literary, culinary and fashion arts, craft and visual arts. The visual arts segment will include film for the first time.

The Ministry said Guyana is already poised to improve on Suriname’s effort last year as the host nation, as all heads of the six disciplines are committed to the highest standards of excellence. The festival’s theme and logo will be approved at an upcoming meeting in Paramaribo then publicity and awareness campaigns will intensify in all three countries.

The IGCF is managed by a technical commission comprising the heads of the ministries and departments of culture, education and community development from the three countries, which in turn have established a Festival Directorate to implement the planning, technical and other support for this year’s programme. Venues ranging from the International Convention Centre and the Main Street Avenue have all been identified and approved by the participating countries representatives.
