Threats led to illegal shotgun possession charge – court hears

A man from Cullen, Essequibo was yesterday remanded on  a firearm possession charge when he appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

The court heard that on Monday Jaiandan Sukhdeo of Cullen, Essequibo was in Morawhanna, Aruka River and had in his possession one 12-gauge shotgun without having a firearm licence. Police prosecutor Lionel Harvey in reading the facts said that on the day in question based on a report made by a  woman that the defendant had made threats to her with the firearm, the police conducted a search on a vessel on which he was the only occupant. The search unearthed the firearm in a toolkit aboard the vessel.

Sukhdeo in his defence said that they did not  find anything on him so it was not in his possession. Prosecutor Harvey objected to bail stating that there were no special circumstances requiring bail to be granted and he also asked for the matter to be transferred to the Mabaruma Magistrate’s Court. Sukhdeo’s next court appearance is May 22.
