A father of three died yesterday morning and another man is recovering after a speeding car slammed into them on the Wales Public Road, West Bank Demerara (WBD) on Sunday night; the driver of the car is in police custody.

Police in a press release said they are investigating the fatal accident which claimed the life of Prem ‘Kedar’ Sukhdeo, 54, of Lot 30 Patentia, WBD. Sukhdeo died around 3 am yesterday at the Georgetown Public Hospital where he had been transferred and was receiving medical attention.

Meanwhile, 18-year old Michael Alleyne was treated and later discharged yesterday. According to reports, Sukhdeo was riding his bicycle in the direction of his home when the car crashed into him some time around 8.45 pm on Sunday last. The vehicle, eyewitnesses said, also slammed into Alleyne who was standing at the side of the road. He sustained serious injuries to his left hand and foot.

A police official informed this newspaper that the car driver was under the influence of alcohol and was speeding at the time of the accident.

The official said investigations have so far revealed that the man lost control of the car and crashed into the two men.

According to the dead man’s wife, Janki Sukhdeo, he left home some time during the day to visit his friend and while headed home he met with the fatal accident. She said she was unaware if her husband was under the influence of alcohol, adding that he usually consumes but not a regular basis.

The distraught woman said they got word of the accident some time around 9 pm but she was too afraid to venture to the scene so her son went.

Charrandiyal Sukhdeo, the man’s son, told Stabroek News that when he arrived at the scene his father’s body appeared to be normal and he was not bleeding. He added that from all indications it looked as though the elder Sukhdeo had sustained just a broken foot.

According to Alleyne, he and his friend had just left a nearby pools shop and they were walking on the left side of the road when the car collided with him and the driver lost control of the vehicle and crashed into the Sukhdeo who was on the right side of the road.

This is the latest in a series of fatal accidents that occurred over the weekend. Speeding was a common factor in all.
