Accused wife abuser remanded until he finds alternative place to stay

A cane harvester was remanded by Magistrate Hazel Octave-Hamilton at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court yesterday until he finds a place to stay away from his reputed wife after he allegedly threatened to slit her throat.

George Spelling, 36, of Stanleytown Public Road, West Bank Demerara, was charged with the offence of making use of threatening language to his reputed wife Siglet Small on Monday in the vicinity of  Stabroek Market.

The couple has been together  for a number of years.  After being asked twice by the magistrate Small said that the accused had threatened to beat her up a number of times before. She also mentioned that the house she and the accused live in is on a piece of land belonging to his family and they will be annoyed with her if he is remanded. Small added that she has nowhere else to go if they put her out of the premises.

When asked by the magistrate what she would like her to do with the accused, Small replied that she would go with whatever the magistrate decides.

The magistrate then told the accused that she does not want to place him back in the same house as Small, and he must find an alternative place of abode during the continuation  of the matter or he will be remanded. The accused then replied that he has nowhere else to go and was remanded until he finds somewhere. She also advised Small to seek counseling.

The case will continue on May 21.
