Sophia man hospitalised after hit on head with wood

A Sophia man landed in the hospital last evening after an assailant hit him to the head with a piece of wood and there is fear that his condition may deteriorate since he has previously undergone a series of surgeries to the head.

Devonty ‘Davo’ Da Silva, 20, of 862 South Sophia, was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital following the incident, which occurred sometime around 4pm yesterday at Sophia, where the attacker also resides.

According to Da Silva’s friend, Seon Allen, several friends were in the streets conversing when his attacker, Chucky (only name given), approached Da Silva and chucked him.

“Davo turn and ask he if is just so this thing is happen and he went up the road and come back and he draw a big wood and when Davo start to walk away he come from behind and as Davo turn around he lash he across he face with the wood,” he said.

Allen, who wore blood-stained pants, said his friend dropped to ground and started trembling.

“He whole face burst away and he was bleeding through his nose. He was just shaking up… he couldn’t move at all,” he added.

Allen summoned a taxi and transported Da Silva to the hospital, where doctors immediately took him to the Accident and Emergency room to examine his condition.

Outside of the hospital, Alma Da Silva awaited word while noting her son’s pre-existing head trouble.

“Last year, he was to come back and do he last surgery and he refuse to do it. He said ‘mommy, God got to do this surgery because I don’t want no more.’ Whole week last week he crying out for he head, he getting pain in he head,” she said.

Jovace Da Silva, meanwhile, told Stabroek News that the problem between her brother and his attacker stemmed from a confrontation they had on May 26, when her brother and a group of friends hosted a party in Sophia for Independence Day.

“At the party, my brother was the barman and the boy wha hit he come and buy one Mackeson and he take two, so my brother take back one of the Mackeson and say you only pay for one and that is what cause the problem. My brother still give he the other one though, so I don’t know why he had to do this,” the girl said.

His mother told this newspaper that her son had never gotten into any problem such as this one in the past and she never expected the attack. She stated that he is a student of the Mercy Wings School, where he studies catering, and he is expected to graduate next month.

“His school got him a job on a cruise job and he was going to start when he graduate next month end. He get up this morning and come and hug and kiss me and he say ‘old girl, one more month and I gon set you right,’” she said as she wept.

“The whole neighbourhood know him. As soon as somebody get a party, is Davo is the cook. He is Sophia baby… that’s why the whole Sophia here,” she added pointing to the large group of persons who gathered at the hospital yesterday as they awaited word from doctors about Da Silva’s condition.
