Repeat wife abuser reprimanded, discharged after 7 days on remand

Kenneth Bissoondyal, 55, who had been remanded for seven days after he confessed to assaulting his wife of thirty years, Kuntie Gopaul, was reprimanded and discharged on Wednesday by Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo at the New Amsterdam Court.

Police Corporal Roberto Figueira, prosecuting in the case, said the defendant, who had served numerous sentences for similar offences, returned to his home on June 3 at Cumberland, East Canje, where he unlawfully assaulted Gopaul.

Gopaul, who appeared before the court with injuries to her face, said that her husband returned home under the influence of alcohol, entered their bedroom and blew out the lit lamp, leaving the area in darkness.

Gopaul then called out for her son, who was in a nearby bedroom and when he turned up to re-light the lantern, he observed his father cuffing and slapping his mother. The matter was reported at Reliance Police Station and the defendant was subsequently charged.
