Cell phone vendor, another man accused of $2M heist

Two men accused of breaking into a building and stealing $2 million in cash and other items were yesterday granted bail in the sum of $250,000 each by acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.

The allegation against Paul Lashly and John Campaign is that between June 13 and 17, they broke and entered the bond of Industrial Services Supply and stole two laptops, two safes and a quantity of US and Guyana dollars, all valued $2 million and the property of Hemant Narine.

The duo pleaded not guilty to the joint charge of break-and-enter and larceny when it was read at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

Lashly, 21, of Church Street, Georgetown is a cell phone vendor; while, Campaign, 23, is unemployed and lives at 290 Thomas Street South, Cummingsburg.

According to the prosecution’s case, on the day in question, Narine secured his business premises and left. Upon his return, he saw the breakage and upon checking, discovered the items mentioned in the charge, missing.

A police report was subsequently made and an investigation launched which later led to the recovery of the cash and laptops at the homes of the defendants. They were arrested.

The attorney who represented the accused, made an application for them to be admitted to reasonable bail, saying that they have no antecedents and posed no risk of flight.

The prosecution had no objection to the defendants being granted their pre-trial liberty. The matter will be called again on June 26.
