Chocolate vendor accused of stealing phone

A chocolate vendor facing a larceny charge was yesterday released on self-bail after telling a court that she had no money to post bail.

Joanna Forde, of Lot 63 West Ruimveldt, Georgetown, was taken before Magistrate Dylon Bess in Georgetown, where she was charged and released on her own recognisance.

The charge against her states that on August 30, at West Ruimveldt, Georgetown, she stole a cell phone valued at $80,000, and which was the property of Shontay Williams.

Forde denied the charge and told the Magistrate that she did not commit any crimes. She said that she sells chocolates and that she had gone to the police station to report a matter about her brother when the allegation was made against her. She said that the virtual complainant is her brother’s girlfriend. She further said that her brother has all her money, which she loaned to him.

After the Police Prosecutor Delon Sullivan did not object to bail, Magistrate Bess released her on $40,000 bail. However, the woman reminded the Magistrate that she had no money. As a result, she was released on self-bail.
