Two on assault charges after West Ruimveldt shop brawl

Afron Marshall, 26, a Superbet operator, from West Ruimveldt, and 27-year-old Nicketa Parks, a food vendor from East Bank Demerara, both appeared before Principal Magistrate Faith McGusty at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court yesterday on assault charges.

The duo were charged with assaulting each other on July 14 at Lot 8 Front Road, West Ruimveldt, Georgetown. After the charge was read separately to both individuals, Marshall pleaded guilty with an explanation. Marshall explained that she was in her shop when an argument ensued between two individuals whom she did not identify. She said that Parks, who was in the shop, came up to her and held onto her wrist tightly, but she pushed off Park’s hand. Parks then became annoyed after she pushed off her hand and told the two individuals to get out of her shop. Parks then slapped Marshall and a scuffle ensued between the two women, the court was told.

After listening to Marshall’s explanation, the Magistrate entered a not guilty plea on Marshall’s behalf. Parks pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Police prosecutor Seon Blackman made no objection to either of them being granted bail, but stated that a further investigation needs to be carried out by the investigating rank in relation to the matter. The two were then granted bail in the sum of $10,000 each and placed on a bond to keep the peace until the completion of the trial.

Two men also appeared in the courtroom of Principal Magistrate Faith McGusty on a similar charge. Michael Skeete, 39, a taxi driver from Lodge, Georgetown, and Troy McRae, 45, a carpenter from Werk-en-Rust, Georgetown, were both charged with assaulting each other. The charge stated that on July 16, at Norton and Camp streets, Georgetown, they assaulted each other causing actual bodily harm.

Both defendants pleaded not guilty to the charge. Police prosecutor Seon Blackman did not give facts in the matter. He made no objection to bail being granted to the men. Both men were then released on $15,000 bail each by Principal Magistrate McGusty.

They all are expected to reappear at the City Court at a later date in August.
