Cops question 11 schoolboys after ‘prank’ explosion at dormitory

Eleven boys are assisting the police in their investigations into the cause of an explosion in the male sanitary block of the J.C. Chandisingh Secondary School, at Rose Hall Town, Corentyne, on Tuesday.

The fourth formers are alleged to have attached the fire cracker ‘Thunder King’ to a mosquito coil, which they subsequently lit and left unattended in the toilet cistern. Moments later, a loud explosion was heard and teachers investigating observed smoke emanating from the sanitary block. On checking, the teachers observed that the toilet fixture was damaged.

According to sources, the boys, who are between 15 and 16 years, were questioned but no one was willing to reveal what had happened.
Consequently, their parents, who were notified, accompanied the students to the Rose Hall Police Outpost, Corentyne, where they were questioned by the police. The matter is currently being investigated by the Department of Education.

Two years ago, a similar incident occurred at the school and the perpetrators were transferred to other schools within the region.
