Bentick wins MCYS-sponsored 5K event

Tyshon Bentick of the Guyana Defence Force was the winner of the Open category of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, 5K event and fitness jog.

Bentick clocked 21 minutes and 16 seconds while Carlon Halley was second in 22 minutes and 16 seconds.

Shawn Semple, 23 minutes and 21 seconds was third and Paul Corlette, 23 minutes and 57 seconds fourth.

Ashanti Scott, also of the GDF, won the women’s category in 24 minutes and 44 seconds with Eva Harry of the Guyana Police Force second in 28 minutes and five seconds.

Tracy Moses, 29 minutes and nine seconds was third and Donna April, 31 minutes and two seconds, fourth.

Joel Benjamin of the GPF was the lone competitor in the junior boys’ category and clocked 28 minutes and 48 seconds while Jevina Straker of the Running Brave Athletic club won the junior girls’ category in 25 minutes and 44 seconds from Sibbiqua Shabazz of the GDF who placed second in 29 minutes and 57 seconds.

In the Masters (40 to 55 years old) category,  Lyndon Harrison, won in  24 minutes  and 29 seconds from Llewellyn Gardener who was second in 24 minutes and 37 seconds while Errol Warde placed third in 25 minutes and  26 seconds.

In the Masters (55 years and above) category, Maurice Fagundes took top honours completing the distance in 28 minutes and 59 seconds.

Alicia Fortune

Franklin Archer (unattached) was second in 35 minutes and 33 seconds while Mexican Ambassador to Guyana, Francisco Olguin, placed third in 36 minutes and 36 seconds.

Alicia Fortune of Running Brave Club was the winner for the Masters (women) category finishing in a time of 28 minutes and five seconds.

The event, which attracted athletes in record numbers, started at the University Of Guyana/East Coast Public Road junction and ended outside the MCY&S building on Main Street.

Jevina Straker

Fagundes received a prize for being the oldest competitor while one was also given to Calvin Thomas who suffered from medical condition which caused him to walk at the age of 17.

Thomas has competed in the Mexican/Guyana half marathon race and he also competed in the South American 10K road race.
