Policewoman charged with demanding $10,000

A policewoman who allegedly demanded $10,000 from a man who along with another person no longer wanted to proceed with a matter was on Friday placed on $75,000 bail when she appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

The allegation against Corporal Sharon Logan is that on June 25 at the Kitty Police Station, being a public servant, she accepted $10,000 from Rawle Timothy for herself, as gratification other than legal remuneration for not instituting the appropriate charge resulting from a report made by Timothy.

Logan who resides at 638 Cummings Lodge and is attached to the Kitty Police Station; denied the charge of demanding money with menace when it was read to her by acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry before whom she appeared.

The prosecution’s facts are that after Timothy indicated to the accused that he and the potential complainant no longer wanted to proceed with the matter, Corporal Logan told him that he would have to pay $10,000; $5,000 for them each.

The court was told that Timothy then went to the CID Headquarters where he made a report after which a sting operation was set up.

Sergeant Philip Sheriff who presented the facts said that Timothy was sent back to the station with the money; each bill marked, while police staked out a café opposite the station.

As Timothy was handing over the marked bills to Logan, the court heard that the police went in. She was subsequently arrested and charged.  The matter will be called again on July 17.
