Suspected Bartica burglar died of strangulation, head trauma

A post mortem examination performed yesterday on the body of suspected burglar Ryan ‘Budram’ Ramkarran revealed that he died as a result of manual strangulation and blunt trauma to the head.

Ramkarran, 23, of Fourth Avenue Bartica was allegedly killed, by 30-year-old Carey Bhojedat, on Sunday last, after he broke into a bar in a failed burglary attempt.

The examination was performed in the presence of the dead man’s mother, Ophelia Persaud, at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) by government pathologist Dr. Nehaul Singh.

Bhojedat, who was stabbed while confronting Ramkarran, was discharged from the Bartica Hospital sometime yesterday and is said to be in custody at Police Headquarters, Eve Leary, assisting with investigations.

Although police said that Ramkarran was killed as he attempted to burgle Bhojedat’s home, at Second Avenue, Bartica, they initially labelled Bhojedat as a ‘suspect.’

But Crime Chief Seelall Persaud told Stabroek News on Tuesday that they were not treating the case as a murder, since Ramkarran invaded the man’s home and was killed. He added that they would still have to investigate the circumstance in which the man was killed and the file would be forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for advice on whether Ramkarran was killed as an act of self defence.

Stabroek News was told the Bhojedat and wife Niclia Lobres had closed their business and were in their apartment in the upper flat of the building when they heard a noise in the lower flat. The man then went to investigate and was confronted by Ramkarran, who attacked him with an ice pick and stabbed him several times about his body. Bhojedat reportedly retaliated and strangled his attacker to death.
