Inquest ordered into strangulation of suspected burglar

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) yesterday ordered an inquest into the death of suspected burglar Ryan ‘Budram’ Ramkarran who succumbed to manual strangulation and blunt trauma to the head.

Ramkarran, 23, of Fourth Avenue, Bartica was killed, allegedly by 30-year-old Carey Bhojedat, on Sunday last, after he reportedly broke into a bar in a failed burglary attempt.

Crime Chief, Seelall Persaud, said the inquest was ordered to determine whether Bhojedat was criminally liable and if he is found liable charges will be instituted.

Bhojedat, who was stabbed while confronting Ramkarran, was discharged from the Bartica Hospital some time yesterday and is said to be in custody at Police Headquarters, Eve Leary, assisting with investigations.

Although police said Ramkarran was killed as he attempted to steal from Bhojedat’s home, at Second Avenue, Bartica, they initially labelled Bhojedat a “suspect”.

Stabroek News was told that Bhojedat and his wife Niclia Lobres had closed their business and were in their apartment in the upper flat of the building when they heard a noise in the lower flat.

The man went to investigate and was confronted by Ramkarran, who attacked him with an ice pick and stabbed him several times about his body. Bhojedat reportedly retaliated and strangled his attacker.
