No arrests in murder of Garden of Eden farmer

No arrests have been made in the murder of Garden of Eden, East Bank Demerara (EBD) farmer Bhim Narine Ramanand, whose lifeless body was discovered at his home on Sunday morning.

Relatives of the man reported yesterday that the police are following several leads in connection with the man’s death. They said that the police are trying to establish a motive for the killing of the 61-year-old man, while noting that robbery has not been ruled out.

Ramanand was found with his hands tied behind his neck and suspected stab wounds about his body in his yard around 9:30 on Sunday morning at his Lot 1, Garden of Eden, East Bank Demerara home.

Police said that an investigation has been launched into the re-migrant’s death. The man lived alone. His licensed shotgun and a grass cutting machine were believed to have been taken by the perpetrators.

Relatives told Stabroek News on Sunday that the man’s death might be connected to a recent court matter, in which judgment was passed in his favour.

They related that Ramanand is owed hundreds of thousands of dollars by a man who rented the bottom flat of his home, while he lived in the United States several years ago. The matter was taken to the courts after the re-migrant returned to Guyana and discovered that the tenant was not paying the rent.

The matter concluded and the man’s former tenant was made to repay the sum owed to the farmer. However, the farmer was unable to locate the individual.

A post–mortem examination is expected to be performed on Ramanand’s body tomorrow.
