GCB secretary charged with perjury

Secretary of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) Anand Sanasie was yesterday arrested and charged with perjury by the Guyana Police Force.
Lawyer for Sanasie last night told Stabroek Sport that his client was arrested at around 2.30pm yesterday, charged and told to appear in Court at 9am this morning after being released on $100,000 bail.

Datadin said Sanasie was charged for perjury in one of the many matters that are currently engaging the attention of the Court.
He declared that the charge was bad in law and was apparently motivated by things other than legal considerations.
Datadin said the matter had to do with items from the GCB’s office.

“Anand Sanasie swore in an affidavit to say that the items in the office of the GCB are as follows and he listed them. They are saying that at the time he swore in the affidavit, the information was false because the GCB did not own the items but DEB Essentials did,” Datadin said.
Datadin is arguing that there is “vast separation” between ownership and custody.

He said Sanasie swearing that…”I have in my custody the following items which are the office equipment….,” and listing the items did not mean that Sanasie  owned the items.

He suggested that what Sanasie was in fact saying was that he was responsible for the assets. Datadin also argued that DEB Essentials is a commercial arm of the GCB and because it is an extension of the GCB the issue of ownership should not even arise.
He said in a Court of Law there is a difference between ownership and possession, which is in effect, custody.

“The charges that have been laid against Mr. Sanasie are intended to damage the reputation of the GCB and Anand Sanasie because all that will happen is that there will be headlines around the world and people will draw their own conclusions,” Datadin stated.

He added:”In reality these charges have no basis in law and only serve as media mongering and headline grabbing issues.
”I am confident that Anand Sanasie has not committed perjury under the Laws of Guyana or anywhere else,” Datadin ended.
