Digicel funds new multi-million-dollar Mahaica children’s home

Digicel representatives on Wednesday joined the Human Services Minister for a sod-turning ceremony for the new multi-million-dollar Mahaica Children’s Home that will replace the existing structure which houses 50 children.

At the groundbreaking ceremony, Digicel CEO Gregory Dean said the company is happy to assist with not only providing a safe haven for children but also a comfortable home that will aid their growth and development.

Digicel Head of Marketing Jacqueline James, Minister of Human Services Jennifer Webster and Digicel CEO Gregory Dean turn the sod for the new Mahaica Children’s Home.

“Since Digicel’s launch in Guyana, the company has been working with a number of charities across the country.

However, we wanted to do something even more meaningful this year that will contribute to the development of many over a long period,” Dean said. After visiting the home last Christmas, the company decided to embark on this project.

Minister of Human Services and Social Security Jennifer Webster said the ministry is happy to work along with Digicel to ensure that the new home is equipped with all the features that will aid children’s growth.

The new home was designed by Marcel Gaskin and Associates. Digicel Head of Marketing Jacqueline James said a fully furnished home will be presented on completion of the project. It will feature girls’ and boys’ dormitories, bathrooms, laundry room, study room, recreational room, infirmary, kitchen, nursery, dining room, office and caretaker’s quarters.
