Mercy…woman admits setting reputed husband’s gate, fence on fire

A woman yesterday pleaded guilty to setting fire to the gate and fence of her reputed husband’s property when she was brought before Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

Mercy Andrews, of Lot 20 Mercout Square, was charged for unlawfully and maliciously damaging the wooden fence and gate valued $25,000, belonging to her reputed husband Colin Simmons.

The prosecution’s facts stated that on the day in question, around 2:30 am, Simmons woke to the sight of his gate and fence on fire.

Upon going outside he saw the defendant at the gate and she then ran and sat on the road.

Moments later, Simmons stopped a passing police patrol and made a report. The defendant was subsequently arrested and taken to the East La Penitence Police Station where she was later charged.

Simmons told the court that he had been in a relationship with the defendant, and took care of her in his home, but he was forced to bring the relationship to an end.

Andrews, when asked to speak, told the court she has “nothing to say.”

After the magistrate inquired whether she wished to extend an apology to her reputed husband, the defendant then softly said yes.

The magistrate, after hearing the case, fined Andrews $30,000 or one month’s imprisonment as the alternative.
