Ramotar congratulates Jamaica on 50th independence anniversary

President Donald Ramotar yesterday sent special greetings and congratulations to the Government and people of Jamaica on the significant occasion of their 50th anniversary of independence.

President Ramotar, according to a copy of his message to Jamaica Prime Minister Portia Simpson-Miller made available by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said that the “tremendous success by the Jamaican athletes Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Usain Bolt at the London Olympics is a fitting tribute to a nation which is celebrating such a significant milestone in its history.”

He added, “I extend to them personal congratulations in my own name and on behalf of all of Guyana. I wish the Jamaican team further success in these Games.”

Jamaican sprinter Yohan Blake also thrilled his homeland by winning the silver medal in the 100-meter dash at the London Olympics on Sunday.

The Guyanese leader noted that the advances made by Jamaica over the years “are no doubt a manifestation of the hard work and endurance of the people in the preservation of their independence.”

President Ramotar also reiterated his commitment to further build on the friendly and cooperative relations which happily exist between the two countries and peoples “as together we strive to pursue the common goals of the Caribbean Community.”
