The working class should not be a football

Dear Editor,

The struggle to improve and develop a decent living standard for the working class has been a great challenge ever since this new dispensation of political power in our beautiful and diverse country. The government and the combined opposition have to realize that the people have empowered them to do a job, and that is to create a level playing field, foster unity, ensure good relations with our neighbours, provide security and develop growth in every sector of our economy.

Over the past months we have seen the tug of war in using the working class to win some political points. This is not the time for that, and I say to the working class to be very careful of the power hungrys. As Guyanese we must live in harmony with a fresh breath of air of comfort, prosperity, peace and security in our dear land.

The Ethnic Relations Commission is a constitutional body that has essential functions to execute under the constitution. However, this constitutional body is being a targeted by those who preach but don’t practise what they preach.

The recent move by the so-called good samaritans to destroy the image of such an important body did not prevail. The decision by Chief Justice (ag) Ian Chang says it all. Finally the CEO needs to be congratulated for steering the ship during such a rough tide. However, at this time I am happy that the staff got back their jobs and can continue to provide for their families. The working class should not be used as a football.

Yours faithfully,
Surujpaul Mathura
