Will Ramotar respect the vote of the people’s representatives?

Dear Editor,

It has been more than two weeks now since the people spoke through their parliamentary representatives, and registered their lack of confidence in Minister of Home Affairs Clement Rohee. The no-confidence motion passed against Minister Rohee, in the National Assembly came after the gunning down of three Lindeners and the shooting and wounding of many other peaceful protestors.

Despite the fact that a no-confidence motion was passed by the parliamentary majority, the President and the PPP/C government seem to be on a mission to disregard the views of the people. Their consistent public comments in support of the Minister and their stated intention to keep him in office fly in the face of decency and morality. I also believe that the action of the PPP/C government with respect to the treatment of citizens continues to be very disrespectful, to say the least.

We have witnessed this same kind of unhelpful posture during the days of the infamous ‘death squad’ and then Minister of Home Affairs Ronald Gajraj.

During that notorious crime-ridden period the PPP/C government, and then President Bharrat Jagdeo, demonstrated contempt for the people and vowed to keep Mr Gajraj in office, but after months he was forced to leave.

Today, it appears that history could repeat itself in Mr Rohee’s case.

I wait to see whether President Ramotar will let good sense prevail and respect the vote of the people‘s representatives and ask for Mr Rohee‘s resignation, or whether will he follow in the footsteps of former President Bharrat Jagdeo in the case of Ronald Gajraj,  and let public pressure force Minister Rohee out. Mr Rohee’s performance in office can only be described as incompetent; let the wishes of the people prevail.

Yours faithfully,
Lurlene Nestor
