Ministry of Sport did not choose the coach for Niall Roberts

Dear Editor,

Your edition of Wednesday, August 8, carried correspondence over the name Hamilton Green JP, captioned ‘Even in sport we seem unable to rise above petty party politics.’

The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport is really reluctant to validate that missive with a response. However, we are constrained to make three points: the government through this ministry has expended and is budgeting millions on the development of sport in Guyana; we’ve done all that is humanly possible to motivate the sport associations to be properly managed, democratic and functional, so where is the “petty party politics”? The coach for Niall Roberts’ participation was not chosen by the Ministry of Sport; Mr Green must check with the Guyana Amateur Swimming Association with respect to any “politics” in the choice of coach.  The Guyana Olympic Association might also be in a position to assist Mr Green in that regard.

As the Ministry of Sport we too are saddened by our seeming inability to win Olympic medals.

We must all contribute to that objective come Rio in 2016.  (Incidentally, how many Olympic gold medals were won by Guyana during the regimes of Hamilton Green over twenty-eight years?

Yours faithfully,
Neil Kumar
