Family questioning Diamond man’s reported suicide

The family of a man who is reported to have hanged himself at his Diamond, East Bank Demerara, home believe that there was foul play in his death.

Ganga Persaud Parmessar, 39, a former manager of the Mc Doom branch of Pestex, was found hanging from the ceiling of his garage by a relative of his wife on July 29, shortly after an argument between the man and his common-law wife.

A post-mortem examination on the remains of Parmessar revealed that he died as a result of asphyxiation and compression of injuries to the neck.

But members of his family say that his body bore marks of violence which cannot be as a result of him hanging himself. They also noted that there was no mark on his neck to suggest that he hanged himself with an electrical cord—a conclusion that they are still to accept. Parmessar’s relative also said that they believe that his wife and her relatives are withholding information about his death.

When contacted by this newspaper the man’s wife said that she had no comment on the issue.

According to one of Parmessar’s relatives, who asked not to be named, the couple would normally have domestic problems but he was not the type of person who would commit suicide, since his life was centred on his wife and their two children.

On the night of Parmessar’s death, the relative said that the man’s wife told him that they had an argument earlier in night. Shortly after the argument, Parmessar left the house and told his wife “ah gone see you later.”

The relative also said that the man’s wife told him that about five minutes after Parmessar left the house, one of her relatives, who was visiting from overseas, went and looked for him, only to find him hanging from the garage ceiling by an electric cord.

During an interview with this newspaper, the relative related that Parmessar’s wife did not show any emotions after his death nor was she present at the Diamond Diagnostic Centre after he was taken there. They also stated that his wife’s relatives, who were visiting form overseas, left the country the day after the man was found dead.

The relative said that he was not around when the incident occurred but he received a call around 3 am from his niece who informed that Persaud hanged himself.

He said he then rushed to Persaud’s home, where he found his wife and her relatives at home. He said the man’s wife informed him that after they found him hanging, one of her relative cut the cord from his neck and took him to the hospital.

The relative further commented that they then proceeded to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre, where they were informed by hospital officials that Parmessar had died.

He said upon examining the man, no evidence, such as any mark around his neck, was present to suggest he died from hanging himself. Instead, the relative said, they saw bruises on his body which added to their suspicions about his death.
