GROS ISLET St Lucia, CMC – St Vincent and the Grenadines crowned themselves Windward Islands Twenty20 champions when they beat Dominica by 22 runs in a low-scoring Championship final at the Beausejour Cricket Ground here Sunday night.
Sent in to bat, the Vincentians made what seemed to be a subpar total of 98 for seven off 20 overs, with Donwell Hector top-scoring with 27.
The Vincentian effort could have been even worse had it not been for a cameo 12-ball 25 not out by number six Atticus Browne while Miles Bascombe chipped in with 20 at the top of the innings.
Dominica used an all spin attack for the duration of the innings that restricted the free scoring of the Vincentians. Orthodox left arm spinner Ray Casimir was the pick of the bowlers with two for nine and off-spinner Vivian Titre claimed two for 18.
In their turn at the crease, Dominica then laboured to 76 all out in 19 overs as the Vincentians employed a similar approach using spin for the first 16 overs of the innings.
Their reply started disastrously as opener Tyrone Theophile was bowled first ball by left-arm spinner Alston Bobb who ended with two for 11.
Junior Jervier top-scored with 19 and left handed opener Ezra Green (15) and all-rounder Titre (14) were the only other batsmen who reached double figures.
Experienced left arm seamer Kenroy Peters, who came on in the 17th over, finished with three for 11 while leg-spinner Keron Cottoy (2-17) and off-spinner Ronaldo Wright (2-19) were also among the wickets.
In the earlier third place playoff, Grenada condemned St Lucia to bottom place with a 61-run win over the hosts – their fourth straight defeat in the competition.
Opting to bat first, Grenada recovered from a position of two runs for two wickets to post the tournament’s highest score of 175 for five off 20 overs.
Tade Carmichael plundered the St Lucian attack, rattling up 67 off 45 balls with five boundaries and three sixes while captain Devon Smith also played a significant hand striking 66 off 60 balls with 10 boundaries.
The two featured in a third wicket stand of 136 off 105 balls.
Fast bowler Xavier Gabriel was the best bowler with two for 31.
St Lucia then lost wickets at regular intervals, slipping to nine for four before eventually folding for 114 off 18.3 overs.
Left handed middle order batsman Dalton Polius struck the top-score of 37 and the experienced Sergio Fedee contributed 25.
Fast bowler Josh Thomas, who did the early damage for Grenada, finished with three for 19 while left arm spinner Ronald Etienne (2-16), Dennis George (2-20) and Akim Alexis (2-24), all picked up two wickets apiece.
