Driver held after No. 10 hit and run

The driver involved in the fatal hit-and-run accident at No. 10 Village, West Coast Berbice on Sunday night has been arrested and the victim was identified as Ganesh Persaud, 45, of No. 10 Village.

Reports are that Persaud, a labourer known as ‘Bruk-up’ or ‘Batman,’ was struck down around 8:30 pm while walking along the road. He was reportedly on his way home.

The driver fled the scene after hitting him and reports are that the driver was taken into custody yesterday.

Persaud’s lifeless body was placed in the trunk of the police car and taken to the Fort Wellington Hospital, before being removed to the Anthony’s Funeral Home nearby.

Stabroek News was told that Persaud, a habitual drinker was said to be under the influence of alcohol when he met his demise.

He lived with his son, Vicky, 18 who is differently-abled. Neighbours said yesterday that Vicky was taking the death of his father hard.

The man also has another son who is mute and three daughters–two are institutionalised at an orphanage and another who was adopted.

His sister, Anganie De Heart, of Port Mourant, said she learnt of her brother’s death yesterday morning. She said her brother “used to spray people yard and catch bat for a living.”
